A gemstone is a protein shake for lifting heavy karmic weights. Take the wrong one and you will still be lifting — in the wrong direction.

Where did yours come from?
An internet chart. A friend's suggestion. A jeweller who happened to have one.
A gemstone strengthens a planet. Strengthen the wrong one and you spend years pushing hard in a direction you did not want to go — and because the effect is gradual, most people never connect the two.
This is the one remedy where being wrong is worse than doing nothing.
Ten rules the trade would rather you did not know
There is no one-size-fits-all
Every prescription is specific to a chart. A stone that transforms one person's decade does nothing for their brother.
The wrong stone does real damage
Not ‘it will not work.’ It pushes the wrong planet, in the wrong direction, for as long as you wear it.
Why, when and what — in that order
Those three questions decide everything. Anyone answering ‘what’ without the other two is guessing.
It comes from the chart and the daśā, not from a birth month
Gemstone prescription rests on your birth chart, the planetary positions and the running daśā and mahādaśā. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something, not advising you.
Lifetime stones and daśā stones are not the same thing
Some stones are worn for life. Others are for one specific period, tied to a daśā that will end. They are not interchangeable, and treating a daśā stone as a lifetime stone is one of the most common and most costly errors in this field.
A stone worn past its time turns
When a daśā-guided stone reaches the end of its period, it must come off. Keeping it on is not neutral. This is the rule nobody selling you a gemstone will ever mention, for reasons that should be obvious.
A navaratna ring does not work
Nine stones for nine planets in a single ring is a jeweller's product, not a remedy. Planets in a chart are not equal, not all friendly, and not all in need of strengthening. Wearing all nine at once means strengthening the ones that were harming you.
A stone can be worn for someone else
A remedy in your chart can improve prospects for someone close to you. This is a genuine technique and it is rarely known.
It is not only about money
Gemstones are prescribed for mental steadiness, emotional balance and clarity as often as for prosperity.
For this age, it is a strong remedy
Gemstones are rājasic, and in Kaliyuga that is precisely why they act quickly — provided the stone is right and the timing is right.
The most common error, and it is automated
Most astrological software recommends the gemstone of your lagna lord and stops there.
Nothing could be more wrong. The lagna lord is one factor among many, and prescribing from it alone ignores the daśā, the functional nature of each planet in your chart, and what you actually need strengthening.
If your prescription arrived in seconds from a website, that is what happened.
Choosing a stone is measuring, not shopping
Asking which gemstone you should wear is like asking a tailor for a shirt when he has never seen you.
He can hand you something. It will not fit, and no amount of quality in the cloth will fix that.
The chart is the measurement. Everything else — the stone, the carat, the metal, the finger, the day it first goes on — follows from it, and none of it can be decided first.

Elsewhere on this site you will read that a warning is never a route to selling you a gemstone. That is true, and it stays true.
It is why this page spends more time telling you when to take a stone off than when to put one on.
Most people who arrive here do not need one. Some need one for three years and then need to stop. A few need one for life. Those are three completely different answers, and no page — including this one — can tell you which you are.
