Vedic astrology was created to communicate with rajas (demigods). In India, it is known as Jyotish. The rajas are the beings that give us our spiritual guidance; however, they can only communicate with those who are sensitive to the unseen world beyond this planet. Vedic astrology was developed to teach us how to be more attuned to the Spiritual planes of existence and bring us closer to God.

It shows that there are but several laws by which we are governed, which apply not only on Earth but in the spiritual realm.

Vedic astrology is based on the belief that divinities govern the universe and that human beings are subject to these laws. There are three main groups of gods: devas, the rajas, and the Aditya. The devas are those deities who create, maintain and dissolve the universe. The rajas are mechanical beings who act as messengers in outer space. The Aditya are those divinities who administer cosmic justice and ensure that things run smoothly according to the divine will.

The Vedic astrological system is based on the twelve signs of the zodiac (known as the ‘mahadasha’ or ‘muhurta’) and three essential planets: moon, sun and Mars. These are called Aries, Leo, and Jupiter in most parts of the world. The mahadasha is composed of two periods of time: (“Ashtami”, beginning at midnight; “dwitiya”, starting at dawn) which constitute a length of twenty-nine days each. These are the main periods on which human astrology is based. Since astrology, in general, tends to be complicated, it is better to learn Vedic astrology as a discipline, apart from other subjects like history.

The word “Ved” means ‘knowledge’. In this case, ‘knowledge of the gods’, or expressed in more broad terms – ‘knowledge of the soul’. The word “Jyotisha” means knowledge of the stars. Vedic astrology, then, is only knowledge of the stars. It has nothing to do with planets.
